On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
The dragon-fire, on twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun.
– J. R. R. Tolkien, The Hobbit
Lodolite is a form of quartz included with various minerals, akin to rutilated and tourmalinated quartz. Lapidary artists cut and polish lodolite cabochons so that the quartz acts as a magnifying glass and elevates the accompanying minerals from geo-flotsam-and-jetsam to stunning patterns reminiscent of the ocean floor, outer space, and cool grey mountain ranges.
The pendant shown above features a collector quality lodolite of remarkable clarity, with inclusions that bring to mind a wintry peak reaching ever upward in the grey moments just before dawn.
